One more reason i LOVE Will Smith

  • Nov. 7th, 2008 at 3:25 PM

This man is not afraid to show that he has emotion. From yesterday's episode of Oprah.

www.youtube.com/watch

i couldn't find a youtube video about this part of the interview but it's what I really wanted to share. Will and Jada's views on parenting. Straight off of Oprah's site:

In this month's Cookie magazine, Jada opens up about the couple's golden rules of parenting. "One of the central ideas that we agreed on is that our kids are not our property," Will says. "They're people, little people, who deserve the same amount of respect."

This philosophy comes in particularly handy when it's time for the kids to clean their rooms. "We say, 'Okay, here's the deal. That's not your room; that's our room that we're letting you borrow," he says. "It makes a big difference when you tell somebody to 'go clean my room I'm lending you' versus 'clean your room.'"

Will says he and Jada try to enforce the idea that everyone in the family needs to contribute to the group. "We started [asking them] from day one: 'What do you do to make this family better?'"

Will and Jada also show their children respect by encouraging them to have a children's council. One council meeting came about when 15-year-old Trey asked for an allowance of $100 a week. "I said, 'Okay, all you kids go into the room, and I want you to come back and make a recommendation to me of what his allowance should be,'" Will says. So Trey, 10-year-old Jaden and 8-year-old Willow, along with Will's niece and nephew, gathered to discuss the allowance.

"They all went into a room for about 45 minutes. They talked about it, and what they realized is whatever decision they made was a decision that was going to affect all of them," he says. "If it was unreasonable, they would lose their power." When the children's council came back to Will, he says they decided that Trey only needed about $40 a week.

"That is shocking!" Oprah says.

Will says Trey started questioning the importance of material things after his grandmother died. "He was there, in the moment, when she passed," Will says. "He got a real sense of that loss and the idea of needing to create the new Trey, needing to create that new idea." So for his upcoming 16th birthday, he didn't ask for gifts. Instead, he asked his friends to donate presents to a children's hospital. "He just realized, 'Gifts? What does that really mean?'"

"You all must be doing something right," says Oprah. "For a 16-year-old to say 'I don't want gifts. Bring gifts and we'll give them to other people.'"

Referring to a question Oprah asked about the love scene that Will performed with Rosario Dawson, Will isn't afraid to admit that he was terrified. "My worst nightmare is to have a woman that's around me feel like I disrespected her," he said.

Will should be the role model for so many young men today.

I, Too

I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I'll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody'll dare
Say to me,
"Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.

Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed--

I, too, am America.

Embracing Unpredictability
When Life Throws You A Curve Ball

In life, we are always setting goals for ourselves and working to make them happen. This gives us focus and ensures that we use our time and energy efficiently and effectively. It also provides us with a sense of purpose and direction. We know where we are going and what we want to do. But quite often, due to forces outside our control, things do not go as we had planned—the flat tire on the way to the wedding, the unforeseen flu virus—and we have to adjust to a postponement or create a whole new set of circumstances. Even positive turns of fortune — an unexpected influx of cash or falling in love — require us to be flexible and to reconsider our plans and priorities, sometimes in the blink of an eye. This is what happens when life throws you a curve ball.

The ability to accept what is happening and let go of your original expectations is key when dealing with these unexpected turns of fate.
We have a tendency to get stuck in our heads, clinging to an idea of how we think life should go, and we can have a hard time accepting anything that doesn’t comply with that idea. The fact is that life is unpredictable. The trip you thought was for business — and when the deal fell through, you got depressed — actually landed you at the airport two days earlier than planned so you could meet the love of your life. Your car breaks down, and you are late for an appointment. While it’s true that you never arrive at that important meeting, you end up spending a few relaxing hours with people you would never have met otherwise.

In order to keep us awake to opportunity and to teach us equanimity, the universe throws us the occasional curve ball. Remember that curve balls are not only life’s way of keeping us awake, which is a gift in and of itself; they are also often life’s way of bringing us wonderful surprises.
Next time a curve ball comes your way, take a deep breath, say thank you, and open your mind to a new opportunity.

I am thankful for this message.

worst creation in the world

  • Sep. 24th, 2008 at 4:53 PM

When i was 4 my mom, younger brother and I lived in NY for a few years. Times were hard. Really hard. I learned then, of a horrible thing that someone created and decided to pass off as food.

Do any of you remember Grape Nuts

She said that they were filling and good for you. Parents always say that when u'r under 10 years old. In reality, That cereal was disgusting. No wonder I don't see it being sold anywhere.

I ordered out last night because I noticed that the pilot light on my stove had somehow gone out. I will call the rental office today, cuz i am not even gonna try to re-light that thing myself. I'll just eat something on campus today. I know it's simple thing to do, but i'm not gonna do it. I will not be responsible for the building going poof!

*Letters to the Living* By Dr. Maulana Karenga

May my loved ones be happy together forever;
May my death not divide or disperse them;
May they love and visit each other as they did me and
share burdens and beauty together;
May old friends remember my name and
young children learn it with love;
May the joy you wish for me be yours,
the gifts you wish you could given to me
be given to other loved ones,
and the beauty you wish I saw
be shown to and shared with others you love;
May you forgive and forget my large and small faults
remembering I was only human;
And may those in my house never forget I was there,
smile when they remember me and
know it was not my decision to leave
Hotep! (Peace)

Ignorant Olympic Announcers

  • Aug. 9th, 2008 at 1:24 AM

i watched the Olympic opening games and was very disturbed and disgusted by some of the comments made by the announcer while the countries were walking in. I mean, was it just me?

I don't remember the exact country, but he said that they never won an Olympic medal and he doesn't expect them to this year. More comments were made but after a while it was getting on my nerves so much. I couldn't take it.

I just found myself getting more and more upset as the countries came in. Eventually, I just turned the volume all the way down and focussed on the flags and attire of the athletes.

techie.... not me!

How do you feel about Pluto's recent demotion? Should it still be a planet?

View 500 Answers

I kno the other planets must be teasing Pluto like crazy now.... if it had feelings, i'm sure Pluto woulda hit rock bottom by now; all those years as a planet now suddenly just cuz some scientists say so u'r not anymore???? where's the justice in that? how puny does a used-to-be-planet have to be to be get it's planethood taken away? And isn't calling it a planetoid just like throwing the fact that it's not a planet anymore in it's face? i would be upset.  i mean, i'm just saying.....
